This is an early prototype of Bite-Sized Teaching.

How to play:

Start the daily challenge by clicking on the introduction module. This module will introduce you to the task which you’ll need to guide your student through as well as the student’s first response.

In the Clarify module you’ll be presented with a variety of clarifying statements which you’ll need to read and assess. Good clarify statements should be dropped on the left side of the screen and low-information statements should be dropped on the right side of the screen. To drop a statement, click on it and drag it over to a side, and release it.

The student statement which these clarify statements should be responding to, will be displayed at the top of the screen as a reminder.

The Reflect module follows a slightly different structure. You will see the student's response to a clarifying statement and will be able to choose a reflection statement from a handful of options in a dropdown menu.

The Teach and Extend modules are very similar to the Clarify module. For each, you’ll be presented with a variety of statements which you’ll need to read and assess. Good statements should be dropped on the left side of the screen and low-information statements should be dropped on the right side of the screen.

You are sharing Sojourner Truth’s biography with students to push their thinking about how people have used literacy skills and available technologies to communicate in the past. You are hoping exploring the past will help students critically think about how their own literacy skills and use of technology today. This task also develops student skills in identifying evidence in source that supports their inferences. You have asked students to identify evidence in the portrait below that suggests how Sojourner Truth used literacy skills to communicate.

What is a correct student response?

We see Sojourner Truth using literacy in this image because she is communicating through the image that she’s strong and that she’s caring and that she’s smart. She shows she’s strong by the way she’s looking at the camera straight ahead. She shows she’s caring by having the knitting and the flowers. She shows she’s smart by having the book.

Model Student Response 2:

This portrait shows that Sojourner Truth used literacy skills in her advocacy work because she’s able to communicate ideas about herself using symbolism. One example is that she is posing with a book, which is a symbol of knowledge (even though she doesn’t know how to read). Another example is the knitting needles, which represents care for others. Even though Sojourner Truth didn’t know how to read, she used skills of literacy like symbolism to communicate effectively.

What is low information feedback?

Low information feedback has little impact on student learning and does not provide information to students about their thinking or transfer learning to new tasks.

What is a definition of literacy?

Literacy is a set of tools that allows people to communicate ideas and make sense of the world. There are many different tools of literacy, including speaking, writing, reading, listening, and observing. (Edited from https://literacytrust.org.uk/information/what-is-literacy/)

Symbolism – the use of images or objects to stand in for larger ideas (e.g. a clock representing the idea of time).
Close reading – a deep explanation of texts, images, situations, and even people.
Using evidence – backing up ideas with specific examples or data that support an observation about the world.

I think the book on the table shows literacy, but I’m not sure why it’s there since she couldn’t read. She did add words to the bottom of the portrait so that other people could read.
